Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin presides over the EFTA Ministerial Conference in Geneva

Bern, 21.06.2024 – Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin will preside over the Ministerial Conference of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) in Geneva on 24 June. Together with the responsible ministers of the EFTA countries Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, he will discuss in particular the future prospects of free trade policy in an increasingly difficult trade environment. The modernised free trade agreement with Chile will also be signed on the margins of the ministerial conference.

The European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which includes Switzerland, signed a revised free trade agreement with Chile on Monday. Swiss Economics Minister Guy Parmelin also expressed caution about ongoing talks with the Latin American Mercosur trade bloc and “relative optimism” about trade deal negotiations with China. The revised agreement with Chile was signed at a ministerial meeting of EFTA states (Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Norway) in Geneva on Monday. Switzerland is the current chair.
